Chicken Update – We Are Expecting!

So, our girl Goldie, once again, went broody and decided she was going to try to hatch some infertile eggs.  Well, I took pity on her and ordered some fertile eggs from Mypetchicken.com so her efforts were not in vane.   I switched out the infertile eggs for the fertile eggs 8 days ago.   Just look at her, so serious about her job.  12 more days and we will have some chicks hopefully.

She is sitting on 6 eggs.  I’m told there is usually a 50% hatch rate.  I’m going to candle the eggs tonight.  Candle means putting a flashlight up to them to see if there is a chick growing in the egg or not.   The ones that are not growing will be disposed of so they don’t spoil and break in the nest.  This will be my first attempt at candling so my fingers are crossed.

Last year Goldie hatched two eggs out of 6 and I now have Jo Jo and Winnie as a result.  Two very fine hens.  But after they hatched I took the chicks and put them in a brooder and raised them outside of the flock.

This batch will be raised by Goldie within the flock.  I’m very nervous about this. I’m hoping she will be a good mother and protector.  I keep reminding myself that chickens have hatched and raised their young for hundreds of years, so hopefully things will go well.
